The definition of music marketing is different to each person but an article by music marketing website musicindustryhowto.com gave one of the best explanations, which is simply “ Music Marketing = Getting people to listen to your music.”
The ability to properly market music is an essential skill that every musician should learn. When discussing the topic of marketing, the common opinion on the matter is “ I just want to make music and not worry about the marketing.” While making good music is still the most important aspect of a music career, it is no longer enough.
Can’t I just get someone to do the marketing for me?
While there are many platforms that can do this for you, it is often very pricey and you will not receive honest feedback from the platforms. This can lead to several problems such as finding out that the market doesn’t like your music after spending all that time and money. Money that could be better spent on production and mixing
Embrace the Internet and it will bring you success
One of the most important aspects of music marketing is effectively reaching your target audience. The internet has introduced musicians to so many outlets that can expose their music to the world such as social media, music forums, YouTube Channels etc.
It is important that musicians keep up with the technology involved in marketing, so they can fully utilise it.
Many musicians claim that technology has diminished the music scene, which is a very counter-productive way of thinking when they should be adapting to it instead.
In an article about the rapid rise of EDM, Danny Whittle (brand director of world-famous dance club Pacha) summed it up perfectly when he said “Our musical genre embraced the Internet, all other genres fought it.

ReplyDeleteSuthat,
ReplyDeleteIt is true that many artists are interested in the creative aspect of their project but when it comes to marketing their project they are not well informed or interested. The fact of the matter is the marketing aspect is just as important as the project itself as it provides a presence for the artist in the web world. The simple training videos you suggested will provide the tools an artist needs to at least get started on their marketing journey. You also offer great tips that are helpful for the expansion of the audience. These tips are helpful to me as a fellow blogger as well as I am expanding my short story blog entitled, "NiaJeanRose".
Thank you for the informative post.

I thought the point you made about artists trying to reach fans on too small of a scale was intriguing. I would conclude that the reason why many artists do this is because they either misinterpret the analytics they're doing on their social media interaction, or they just aren't doing analytics. Taking the data from social media analytics the wrong way could point them towards a similar fate, if they are placing too much significance on every comment, share or associated post or tweet. The data obtained is but a sampling of what is really at play in regards to a demographic.
ReplyDeleteHi, Suthat
ReplyDeleteIt is true that a lot of artist don't understand marketing themselves. Most artist think they just need to make a mix-tape, put it out and that's it. They don't know that it is 90% business and 10% glamor. There are not many artist that want to put in hard work.

Hello Suthat,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your point that a good music also should have good marketing to make sure it become successful. For young and fresh musicians, I will recommend them use SEO, for those musicians who have some budget and want to get instant results I will recommend them to use paid search. In conclusion, I believe using search engine marketing is one of the most convenient ways to promote music.
